What is Hyaluron?

Hyaluronic acid, is a substance created by the body that works against wrinkles and sagging skin. This naturally occurring filler can be used to boost moisture and revitalize areas of sagging skin. Especially on the face, an injection of hyaluron is particularly effective as a wrinkle treatment and can provide a fresher appearance with immediate effect.

How does Hyaluron work?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural polysaccharide, more precisely a glycosaminoglycan, which is joined together into a complex structure by the body’s own enzymes from individual building blocks. An injection of hyaluronic acid moisturizes the skin and stimulates collagen formation, thereby strengthening connective tissue, which allows the skin to gain volume and firmness.

When is Hyaluronic acid treatment useful?

Treatment with hyaluronic acid can be used to smooth facial wrinkles of all kinds, to form fuller lips, and to contour the face (for example, the cheeks and chin). The procedure has an immediate effect and is a natural way of improving signs of aging skin.

The most frequently treated areas are:

Wrinkles between the nose and corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds)
Lips (increasing volume)
Cheeks and chin (contouring)
Back of the hand, décolleté and face (skin rejuvenation)
Wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabellar folds)

What is the procedure for a Hyaluron treatment?

Before the treatment begins, the skin is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after which the substance is injected into the desired area. The doctor uses very thin needles for the injection, so the treatment is not very painful. If necessary, an anaesthetic cream can also be applied before treatment.

Are there conditions under which precautionary steps might be taken before a Hyaluron treatment?

Intake of blood thinners within the last 7 to 14 days (including aspirin, etc.), as well as vitamin-E or gingko-containing medications, supplements with omega-3 fatty acids, and multivitamin supplements (due to risk of bruising)
Increased occurrence of fever blisters (due to danger of triggering an outbreak in the treated area)
Products already used for wrinkle treatment (Many preparations cannot be combined.)
Known allergy to fillers
Pregnancy and lactation

What should be considered after the treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, the area should not be subjected to pressure or massages for about 12 hours, and dramatic facial movements should be avoided due to the risk of deformation and displacement of the material under the skin.
Avoid extreme sunlight, solarium, sauna, hammam and sports for two weeks after the treatment.
Careful use of make-up immediately after treatment is not a problem and may be useful for covering temporary redness.

When is the effect of the treatment visible?

Results are visible immediately after treatment but continue to improve over the following three days.

How long does the effect of fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid binds water to the treated areas, thereby moisturizing the skin. This effect is long-lasting but not permanent. The duration of the effect is unique to each person and can last for up to nine months.

Risks and side effects

For most people, treatment with hyaluronic acid has no complications. However, the usual reactions associated with an injection may occur after treatment, such as redness, swelling, mild pain, itching or sensitivity. Your doctor will inform you about possible risks before treatment.

Downtime

Despite the fine injection needles, after a wrinkle treatment (as with any injection), there may be slight redness, swelling, pain, itching and/or bruising. Usually, such discomfort decreases after only a few hours but can on occasion last for a few days. Temporary redness and bruising can be easily covered with make-up.
